Typically, the first player to deal is the dealer. He or she is assigned a button, a white plastic disk that indicates the nominal dealer. This is followed by a round of betting. During this round, all but the first player to bet must fold. Once all but the first player to bet has folded, the turn to bet passes to the next player. After the first player to bet has made their bet, the flop is dealt. The flop is the first set of three cards that are placed face-up after the first round of betting.

After the flop, another round of betting is held. During this round, all but the last player to bet must place a bet. Unlike the ante and the blind, the betting is not made directly into the pot. Instead, players place bets into a “pot”, or pool of bets, which is then gathered at the end of the round.

As with other poker variants, the winning hand is usually the highest. But unlike the aforementioned, it is not uncommon for two or more players to remain in the running for the pot after the final round of betting.

The name poker probably derives from the French poque, a card game derived from the Persian game as nas. A popular form of poker during the American Revolution, three-card brag is still played today in the United Kingdom.
